Dave had a long association with those of us in the Blood Group Unit in London. In the years before the unit closed we, Dave and his Bristol blood groupers met biannually alternating between the two locations. These were scientifically stimulating and great fun. When the unit closed in 1995 I was fortunate to be offered a job in the Bristol Institute for Transfusion Sciences which Dave was forming. I will always be grateful for this opportunity which allowed me to continue working in a field I loved. Dave’s casual, relaxed manner belied his amazing memory, intellect and ability to see ‘outside the box’. He loved the perplexities of blood groups and discussing the implications of some of the obscure results obtained A kind and generous person. Dave you will be greatly missed.
